Sunflower Run 2011
The second ‘Sunflower Run’ to raise funds for the St Margarets Hospice in Yeovil and Taunton took place on the Sunday 22nd May. The event was jointly organised by Andrea (the Human Whirlwind) Ledger of St Margarets fund raising department and the club’s Tony Haywood and Mike Axe
The key to the success of these events is the Marshals support and enthusiasm, and as always they arrived on time and ready to go despite the gloomy weather.
The Ivel Barbarians Rugby Club kindly allowed us the use of the clubhouse and surrounding area to accommodate over 300 bikes. Many riders clearly enjoyed the excellent breakfasts provided by the club at very reasonable prices.
Fully fuelled up the entrants left at about 9.45 and were promptly greeted by a sharp shower whilst passing the reservoir at Sutton Bingham, fortunately this was short lived and the ride through Corscombe and on to Misterton via Wynyards Gap was dryish. By passing Crewkerne we proceeded along the A30 through Chard and got another soaking before leaving the main road at Honiton and going through Dunkeswell. We crossed the Blackdown Hills near Hemyock then dropped into our event sponsors, Total Triumph, for a coffee stop. The valiant team from St Margarets supplied everybody with drinks and biscuits before we set off for the return leg via Williton and the A39 to Bridgewater. Riders were able to enjoy the great sequence of bend on the levels before Langport before returning to the rugby club via Somerton and Martock. By now the sun was shining and this helped bring an enjoyable run to a pleasant end.
Thanks to about 50 last minute entries and some great sponsorship the event raised in excess of  £3000 which is up considerably from last year.
Thanks to everybody who took part and assisted in so many ways.
The event will be run again next year at the later date of Sep 9th and will start and finish at Yeovil Town Football club at Huish Park. Total Triumph have again kindly agreed to sponsor the event.
